Introduction

Twelfth Census of the United States (1900) Colorado County, Texas Created by Jennie Sue Muggli, with Matt Ross, Heather Wolston, Amber Hollywood, and Bill Stein

The 1900 census of Colorado County is divided into fourteen sections, or "enumeration districts." Each district was surveyed by one of fourteen individuals in June 1900. For no apparent reason, the districts were numbered from 14 through 27 (rather than one through fourteen as might be expected). The districts and their geographic areas were:

  • Enumeration District 14: Justice Precinct No. 1, excluding the City of Columbus
  • Enumeration District 15: City of Columbus
  • Enumeration District 16: Justice Precinct No. 2
  • Enumeration District 17: Justice Precinct No. 3
  • Enumeration District 18: Part of Justice Precinct No. 4, excluding the City of Weimar, north of the railroad
  • Enumeration District 19: Part of Justice Precinct No. 4, excluding the City of Weimar, south of the railroad
  • Enumeration District 20: City of Weimar
  • Enumeration District 21: Part of Justice Precinct No. 5, east of Cummins Creek
  • Enumeration District 22: Part of Justice Precinct No. 5, west of Cummins Creek
  • Enumeration District 23: Justice Precinct No. 6
  • Enumeration District 24: Justice Precinct No. 7
  • Enumeration District 25: Part of Justice Precinct No. 8, excluding the City of Eagle Lake
  • Enumeration District 26: Part of Justice Precinct No. 8, excluding the City of Eagle Lake
  • Enumeration District 27: City of Eagle Lake

The official population of Colorado County in 1900, as released by the federal government, was 22,203. In fact, the county’s census takers listed 22,205 individuals. A census page, when full, contained information on fifty persons (numbered either 1 through 50 or 51 through 100). Alice E. Allen, who took the census in Weimar, added a fifty-first person to two of her pages, numbering each added person “101.” Apparently, neither of those persons was counted by the government.

These lines were left blank by the various census takers:

  • In section 17, page 1A line 50.

  • In section 18, page 3A line 10.

  • In section 19, page 1A lines 42-50, page 2A lines 4-50, page 2B line 100, page 3A lines 32-50, page  4A lines 6-50, page  4B lines 96-100, page 5B lines 54-100, page 6B lines 65-100, page 7B lines 68-100, page 8B lines 97-100, page 11B lines 87-100.

  • In section 20, page 5B line 100, page 7A line 50, page 8A line 50, page 9B line 100, page 10B line 70.

  • In section 22, page 2B line 81.

  • In section 25, page 3A line 50, page 8A line 20.

  • In section 26, page 1B lines 87-100, page 2B lines 89-100, page 9B lines 98-100, page 10B lines 96-100, page 12B lines 73-100, page 13B lines 85-100, page 15A lines 36-50, page 17B lines 97-100, page 19A lines 41-50, page 19B lines 51-100 (the entire page), page 21A lines 19-50, page 22A lines 19-50.

We have chosen to present our index in two ways: (1) in the same order as the original census, and divided into the same enumeration districts, and (2) in alphabetical order, by surname. Our list can be electronically searched (by using "Ctrl F"), but you should be aware of the fact that either we or the census taker might have spelled any person's name incorrectly. In cases where we knew the latter was true, we added the correct spelling in square brackets. We also included enough information, in parenthesis to the right of each name, to identify each person with a reasonable degree of certainty. Of course, much more information about every person was included on the census. To the right of the parenthetical insertion, we have placed the number of the enumeration district, the page number, and the line number on which the entry for the person appears.
